!Kaboogie lads Sixfoot Apprentice and PCP were interviewed for Community of Independents there a while back. They talk about upcoming releases, the state of Irish electronic music and ‘Scratch-o-Vision’. You can hear the lads weekly radio show on Raidio na Life 106.4fm every Saturday night, 10.30pm-12.00am.

Sonar Report (or: attack of the super blurry photos and shakey video footage)

Monday, June 25th, 2012

Ayo, so I was at Sonar in Barcelona the other weekend. Quality festival, hadn’t been in a few years, and as much as I like standing around in muddy Irish fields dealing with horizontal rain (which kinda adds to the whole experience), it’s nice to buzz around in the sunshine drinking mojitos and being in a partial state of undress.

I’ll do a quick round-up of what I thought was most impressive over the few days. Didn’t get as much of the daytime action in as planned, but saw most of the nighttime acts I’d hoped to check out.

First up, Nightwave. Absolutely bangin set from start to finish: juke, booty, crunk, place went OFF! Here’s a recent mix she did for Dazed Digital:

Next up, we’ve got Supersilent with John Paul Jones. Free improv jazz electronics, slowly mutating and bubbling away. Had the audience captivated proper styles!

One of my personal highlights from the weekend was Mouse on Mars. I saw them for the first time a few years ago at Mantua (RIP) and they blew me away. This time was no different, the basement was rammed full of sweaty bodies and they were joined by ?uestlove from The Roots on drums. Electroid beats with heaps of acid squelch makes one do the shakey-shakes.

FINALLY got to see Amon Tobin’s ISAM show. Absolutely whopper. The sound was tuned for maximum throat vibration so every sup of cerveza took a few attempts!

Saturday night was fairly mega, if a bit messsseeeeeeee, but managed to get to see The Roots in full effect early on in the night:

Die Antword had to be experienced as well:

Modeselektor were pure fire. The sound was on the threshold of my head exploding, which lent a certain edginess to it all!

After that it all got so blurry…

Looking forward to this! Hefty lineup that’s been marinating in bass juice, much like those chops you planned on BBQing cept they’re in the fridge while ye look out at the rain. Take a leaf from the chops’ book and swing by King 7 to COOL DOWN SOME TO THE VIBES, nahmean?

WORD has it that the mighty SWARM INTELLIGENCE has been added to the bill. I’m half thinking of making another food pun here but I’ll spare thee. See yis front left speaker later!

As An Talamh – Notes on Rave in Dublin

Friday, June 1st, 2012

Looking forward to this! As an Talamh (which is Irish for ‘from the ground’ international readers) is a two-part documentary on rave culture in Dublin which will doff its hat to the original crew as well as modern day pirates, ravers, DJs, producers and DIYers who were/are/will be responsible for keeping this city lit (despite the draconian licensing laws that seem to forget about the tens of thousands of people who make a living or socialise (equally important things) outside of the 9-5 stink. Can’t help but think of this sometimes…).

If you like the above teaser and would like to muck in, visit the As An Talamh site here. If you’ve got anything like archive footage, old flyers, photos, anything that can help tell this tale then get in touch here.
