Interview for Number Krunch

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013

Rachel Bothwell from Number Krunch sat down with Shane McKenna and myself recently over a cup of tea to chat about DabbledooMusic, post-successful Fundit campaign. Here’s a quick snippet:

RB: So tell me what you’re trying to achieve at DabbledooMusic?

Shane: It’s a new method of teaching music in primary schools aimed at teachers, children and parents. It exists as a workbook that we self published last December and a free online resource, for use in the classroom or at home. It’s based around a new type of musical notation called graphical notation, which uses moving shapes and colours on a screen instead of classical notation, which uses notes and bars etc.

DabbledooMusic Fundit Campaign Underway (Wahey!)

Friday, June 28th, 2013

Today is a good day. Just launched the DabbledooMusic Fundit campaign to get a few quid together so we can build a proper interactive website for the project. At the moment we’re running off a pretty basic blog with loads of great lessons up there, but in order to spread and get more people involved as we REVOLUTIONISE THE WAY MUSIC IS TAUGHT, COMPOSED AND PERFORMED, we’re gonna need to step it up some. Have a look here to find out more about what we intend to do (the video explains it all pretty well!), what prizes are on offer and also stay in touch with the events and BUZZ we have planned for offer the course of the campaign.

Already we’re 11% funded (thanks folks!). We’ve got 33 days to go, so if you believe in what we do, please donate to support the project. If yr totally strapped, you can still help by sharing it and getting the word out. At Dabbledoo Towers, we’re really looking forward to bringing this to the next level, and we’re pretty lucky to have gotten such support and positive feedback from everyone in the last year and a half. We’ve come a long way, let’s keep her lit!

Oh and here’s a stop motion we did of a graf piece I did featuring Igor the Great to promote the campaign. Shouts to Gilly for camera skills and to the crew at the Shaw for giving us such a prime location!

Dabbledoo Music

Friday, December 14th, 2012

DabbledooMusic is a project Shane McKenna (musician, educator, creative badman) and myself started just over a year ago aimed at giving people the ability to compose and perform music without having to worry about reading standard notation. Using graphic and animated notation, one can perform these scores on any instrument they like (no instruments? then use your voice and some body percussion!). Here’s what it looks like:

We just got our first educational book printed. Aimed at 6-12 year olds, we’ll be launching this at 2pm tomorrow Saturday December 15th in the Centre for Creative Practices, Pembroke St, Dublin. We’ll be running a full workshop showing how the book works as well as providing instruments and graphic scores from the book for people to join in and make some noise! Here’s a taster of what the book will look like:
